Dammit.

This MBP is a little over a year old and already its losing about 80% of its charge by being in my bag for 3 hours.
What's the best way to test and/or recondition to see if it can be coaxed in to lasting a bit longer.

Last week it gave me a "service battery" message and this past week the computer has been crashing while asleep. I had to repair the MBR after one of those crashes.

And, in the time that I wrote that the computer went from telling me that it had 16% battery to jumping to 61% battery, but the battery still shows red.

The linux install on this thing tells me that I only have ~37% life whenever I boot in to it.

Try this: Battery Calibration

I don't do as often as Apple suggests though, but I've had my Macbook battery seemingly drop to really low power levels before I ran that calibration.

I started recalibration last night. Drew it down to 0 and it went to sleep. But I was able to wake it up and run it for another 30 minutes. It sat drained while I slept and I'm recharging it now.

How many cycles on the battery? Open System Profiler, Power Section. It should be listed in there. All user swappable Apple batteries are rated for about 300 charge cycles, which Apple averages to 3 years for the "average" user. For "regular" users, I'd say life is more like 18 months. Which is about how long I've had my MBP and the capacity is really starting to drop.

Only 300? Sheesh. How the hell are you supposed to use a laptop as a laptop then? I've done 320 in just over a year, or 14 months.

Huh. My MacBook regular has 493 cycles and I still get very good battery life out of it.

battery life is related to operating heat as well. my first gen macbook pro fried it's batteries in a couple months. newer machines with built in batteries should be good for about 1000 cycles, and the heat is more or less under control now

My MBP the heat is furious. Another reason I can't use the 9800GT card a lot since I use the sucker unplugged and on my lap quite a bit.

My battery cycle says 182, which I know is wrong. This Macbook is 3 1/2 years old, and the battery won't run the book for more than 15 minutes unplugged.

Goddammit Steve, announce new books already! I swear, I'm gonna go Vaio or some shit if I can't get a new book soon.

I've been running coconutBattery once a month to keep track of how much the battery is degrading.

Actually, it might be right. A 3.5 year old laptop with only 182 cycles would get terrible battery life, because that would indicate that it was left plugged in the vast majority of the time, which kills LiIon batteries.

I'm finding a distinct lack of 3rd party batteries for Unibody MBPs... I have to buy an Apple branded battery.

I bought a NewerTech battery for my PowerBook a little over a year ago. It really has plummeted in capacity lately, and of course the warranty is only for a year. OWC has offered me a 15% discount on a replacement, but I'm pretty disappointed with this one, so I'm not sure I want another. 31 cycles and only a bit over 50% capacity remaining.

Yeah. I'm deciding right now whether I want to sell the laptop to finance an iPad or use the discount they offered me on a stock Apple replacement battery, which will have slightly less initial capacity but has been shown by history to die far less quickly.
