I just got a new (old) TV for my dorm room. It's a Symphonic 19 inch TV. I wondering whether there was anyway to hook my 1 ghz, G4 iBook up to the tv so I can watch DVDs on it.

Does the iBook have an SVHS port? I don't know which version you have.

Or if the iBook has FW on it you can use a video hub. Camcorders usually have either an A/V to FW cable or serve as a hub themselves. There's other things you can get too though.

I've got a port to connect to another moniter, but thats it (besides fire wire, etc normal ports)

You'll have to forgive me, but I thought they added RCA out awhile ago. That would easier than an SVHS port.

And jacks is right, I use an old video camera to convert analog to digital for video input. It can be used for output too, I think.

So, you've looked at the ports an none are SVHS or RCA ports? Then the 'camera as converter" thing is your best bet. But seriously, you don't have RCA?

I've had my Powerbook hooked up to my TV and stereo for the longest time. It's an absolutely fantastic a/v system. Not only can I play DVDs and blast my iTunes, but I can also play [phrase deleted by FBI] using VLC. Booya!

The VGA (RGB) Cable came with my iBook. Maybe you should look somewhere you might have unknowingly stashed it.

I had to pay extra for mine (mid-2001). Maybe it depends on where they were purchased?

So did the icebooks. In fact, I remember buying one of those adapters for my mid-2001 iBook as well. I didn't have to buy one for the 2005 model iBook, or either my 12" or 15" powerbooks.

From the looks of my link, it appears they did that a while back.

(The "funky plug" was a modified version of an ordinary headphone jack, and doubled for that purpose on the iBook. You could plug headphones or speakers into it and they'd work as expected, but it could also accomodate a longer version of the miniplug with extra segments for video, which is what the plug on the cable had. It looked like an ordinary stereo minijack plug, just longer.)

The 2001 vintage icebook had a minijack with three rings plus the tip, which broke out to an RCA video plug with two RCA audio plugs. The rest have a d-sub connector that breaks out to an S-video and an RCA video connector.

Okay so I got my iBook AV Cable. I plugged it in (into headphone jack, and then yellow-yellow, white-white on the tv. My TV doesnt have a red port). I hit the "Game" button on my remote and got a black screen, with the sound of what was playing on my computer. I tried going into the Display preferences and hitting "detect displays" but it didnt do anything. On my menu bar theres a little display icon with four resolution choices (640x480 etc) It also says "Color LCD." However, the Color LCD choice (which I suspect is what would do it) is greyed out and I can't select it. Any ideas?
Again, this is a 1ghz iBook which I got not last christmas, but the christmas before that.

My old Powerbook worked a lot better when I put it to sleep before making the connection. Try this: Unplug whatever cables you hooked up, close the lid on your iBook, hook up the cables, open iBook.

It may need to wake up to see both screens.
