I was watching a DVD tonight, and I had a realization: We don't need these things anymore.
When all of my DVDs were stolen, I decided that I would make a backup copy of all of my data, just so it couldn't happen again, but today, it really hit me. We don't need to carry around these little discs all over the place.
I have a 160GB hard disk, which is enough to hold 17 or so DVDs and all of my data. But with terabyte hard drives on the horizon, and with fiber and BPL becoming available, we're not going to need discs soon.
As someone who thought 5.25" floppies were the top of the line and didn't know that hard drives existed until about eight years ago, that just amazes me. We're not going to need these things.
There won't be anyone selling them in a few years. It will all be software. And we'll be able to carry all of it everywhere.
It's amazing.
